Until recently I did not have the details of Thomas's marriage or death. However, thanks to a distant relative of mine, Margaret Denholm, I was able to find the record of his death and burial. From the information I have, Thomas appears to have lived all, bar the last three months, of his life in Liberton, Edinburgh; certainly, all of his children were born there, as was he. Although we have not yet found a record of Thomas's marriage, all of his children were born to Agnes Mein and her name is recorded on her son's (Thomas Rogers) death certificate as "Agnes Rogers m/s Mein".

Although the 1841 Census records that Thomas was 65, therefore indicating a birth year of 1775/76 and that the birth record I have indicates a birth year of 1772, I am confident that these are one and the same person, primarily because he was born in Liberton and none of the other Thomas Rogers born around that time were born anywhere close to this.

The 1841 Census describes Agnes Rogers as his wife. However, Agnes's death record calls her Agnes Mein. This, together with the facts that I cannot find a record of their marriage and that all of their children's births refer to Agnes Mein as the mother, suggests they never actually married.

25th May 1772

Thomas was born in Liberton on this date and baptised on 31st May. His parents were recorded as John Roger and Margaret Simpson and the witnesses to the baptismal were Robert Finlayson and Peter Peden.

1795 to 1816 - Thomas's Children's Births

Thomas and Agnes Mein had a number of children whose birth details were...

• 2nd July 1795 - their daughter, Isabel Rodger was born in Liberton
• 28th February 1799 - their daughter, Margaret Rodger was born
• 7th March 1802 - their son, James Rodger, was born
• 30th September 1803 - their twin sons, John and Thomas Rodger, were born. Thomas is the person in my direct line.
• 18th October 1805 - their daughter, Marion Rodger, was born
• 5th June 1806 - their daughter, Agnes Rodger, was born. (Given the period between Marion's and Agnes's births, they obviously didn't waste any time and Agnes must have been born a little early.)
• 23rd March 1810 - their twin daughters, Rebecca and Helen, were born.
• 5th January 1813 - another daughter named Helen was born, so presumably the earlier Helen died in early childhood; although no death record has been found.
• 3rd December 1816 - another son named John was born, so again the earlier John, born 13 years before this birth, presumably passed away in the meantime. Again, no death record has been found.

6th February 1831

Thomas's son, Thomas Rodger (6), married Mary Moffat in West Linton, County of Peebles

1841 Census

The Census records that Thomas (7), aged 65 lived with his wife Agnes Rogers, also aged 65 at "Kiln, Liberton, Edinburgh. Both their birth years were given as 1776. Also living there was a Rebecca Rogers aged 25, who I take to be one of their children, although I haven't found a record of her birth and two younger children, Agnes aged 4 and Rebecca aged 1 - presumably Thomas's grandchildren? Thomas's Occupation was recorded as Agricultural Labourer.

21st March 1847

Thomas's 'wife' Agnes Mein died in Newton, Midlothian. She was buried three days later on 24th March. Her place of residence was recorded as Burdiehouse, Liberton. As this was where her son, Thomas Roger (6) was born, it gives me confidence that this is the correct Agnes. Interestingly, although the 1841 Census records Agnes as "Agnes Rogers", her death record calls her Agnes Mein.

Death - 17th June 1847

Thanks to a distant relative of mine, Margaret Denholm, I discovered that Thomas died only a few months after his wife, Agnes. After Agnes died, Thomas apparently went to live with his son, Thomas Rogers (6) at his home in Silverfields, North Leith and this is where he died of "old age". He was buried in Newton in the next plot to Agnes.

Thomas's name was recorded on his son, Thomas Rodger (6)'s, Death Certificate. His occupation was recorded as Lime Burner. His mother is recorded as "Agnes Rogers, M/S Mein", deceased.
