Lots of caveats surround this one. Firstly, there is a dependence on the John Moffat I found being the correct one and that his father, Alexander Moffat married an Isobel Noble whose father's name was James Noble. As can be seen from John Moffat's page, it is not absolutely certain I have got the John Moffat who was my direct ancestor, although it looks likely that I have.

If all that is so, there is a slight chance that I have found the marriage record for Isobel's father, James Noble. There were two James Nobles who married within 'touching distance' of Isobel Noble's birth in 1747 and who lived in the same place as Isobel was born, i.e. Eddlestone in Peeblesshire. Unfortunately, Isobel's mother's name was not recorded on her birth entry, so I don't have the information needed to confirm either of these marriages as being the correct one. I can say that Alexander Moffat and Isobel Noble named one of their children Margaret and that the wife of one of the James Nobles I found was called Margaret Richardson (the other one was called "Barbrae") but that is hardly conclusive. For now I am going to record the brief details of James's marriage to Margaret Richardson, but will not pursue this line further, at this stage.
