Just at the moment I'm not 100% certain about this one. My cousin, Carol, who is also tracing her family tree, is convinced this is George Sutter (5)'s father and she explained to me why, but I can't remember what her explanation was. I'll catch up with her sometime to remind myself. For now though I'll accept it at face value. I don't have much information on him as yet, however, there is some good circumstantial evidence to support this being the correct George - his wife, Ann's, maiden name is Scott and his son George had a daughter he named Ann Scott Sutter. Also, there was a William Scott who was staying with George Sutter (5) at the time of the 1891 Census - he was George's cousin.

I have recently (19/04/2020), found a burial record for a George Soutter that took place in Avondale on 31st July 1832. Unfortunately there is no age given, nor where he was born. However, he was buried in a 'Scott' lair, so it could be the correct one. This George was a Weaver; not a great indicator at this stage, but may prove useful later.

KEY EVENTS AND DATES

15th October 1825

George married Ann Scott in the Parish of Avondale, County of Lanark. The entry provides no more information that however.

1826/1827

Given the age attributed to him in the 1861 Census, George's son George Sutter (5) must have been born in this period. Also the Census tells us that he was born in Strathaven, Lanarkshire. At least we think it's Strathaven - the entry actually looks like "Straithavoa", but there is no such place in Lanarkshire and the nearest place name is Strathaven. Not sure, at this stage, if there is any connection between Strathaven and Avondale, but there is an 'Avonside Street' in modern day Strathaven.

And that's all we know about George at this stage.
